Explanation

John 3:16 is often called "the Gospel in miniature" — a complete summary of the Christian message in one verse. Jesus spoke these words to Nicodemus, a Pharisee who came to him at night, curious but cautious.

The verse opens with God as the subject and love as the verb. This is not sentimental affection but purposeful, self-giving love — the kind that drives a father to sacrifice what is most precious to him. The scope of this love is "the world": not a chosen nation or a worthy group, but all of humanity.

The gift is God's "only begotten Son" — a phrase marking Jesus as uniquely divine, not one figure among many. The purpose of this gift is that "whosoever believeth" — without ethnic or moral qualification — should not perish but possess everlasting life.

The Greek word for "believe" (pisteuón) is a continuous participle: it describes ongoing trust and reliance, not a one-time transaction. Everlasting life (zoén aiónion) means not merely endless existence but life of an entirely different quality — life in union with God.
